At the recent sitting of the House on 17 January 2019, a member of the UN Sri Lanka, Ms. Anushka, highlighted the need to encourage literary works that advocate for social change and the education of the girl child, citing Alexander Emmanuel’s acclaimed novel, Omo, as a veritable example of literature driving transformation.

Published in 2018 by Purple Shelves Literary Services, Omo delves into the sordid realities faced by girl children in Africa, shedding light on issues of marginalization, access to education, and resilience. The work has continued to spark dialogue across literary and development circles on the need to empower girls through storytelling and inclusive education.

Members of the House commended such impactful works, emphasizing the importance of supporting authors whose stories promote awareness, education, and social reform across the continent.
